1) Lagos State
Lagos is the smallest state in this list, with a total of 3,345 km2 Lagos state happens to be the number one smallest state in Nigeria by landmass but Lagos state is also the largest state in Nigeria by population with 21million people living in it, wow how is that possible, well that is a topic for another day.
Despite its smallness in landmass, Lagos state happens to be the most developed state in Nigeria, and also one of the major contributors to the Nigerian economy as it is often referred to as the most economically important state in Nigeria.
2) Anambra State
The number two on the smallest states in Nigeria by landmass is no other than Anambra State, with a total landmass size of 4,844 km2.
Anambra state, located in the southeastern part of the country, is among the top 10 developed states in Nigeria besides being among the smallest states in Nigeria.

3) Imo State
Imo state which is located in the southeastern part of the country is the 3rd smallest state in Nigeria by landmass, Imo state is also an oil-producing state in Nigeria, Imo state is also recorded as the most educated state in Nigeria due to its possession of recognized educational institutions like the Federal University OF Technology Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State University, Eastern Palm University, Ogboko, Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Alvan Ikoku College of Education and many other notable educational institutions.
4) Ebonyi State
Ebonyi state is another state with a low landmass with a total area of 5,670 km2, Ebonyi state is the 4th smallest state in Nigeria but, is mostly known for its contributions to the Nigerian economy with agriculture asides its low landmass.
5) Abia State
With the landmass size of 6,320 km2 Abia state which is located in the southeastern part of Nigeria happens to be the fifth smallest state in the country.
Abia state was carved out of Imo State in the year 1991, it is also has a popular place called, “Aba” which is the most popular city in Abia State, is mostly known for manufacturing consumer goods like plastic, shoes, school bags, textiles, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and cement which has made one of its markets, the Ariaria International Market the largest market in West Africa.
6) Ekiti State
Ekiti state is another southwestern state with a small landmass of 6,353 km2, The state was created in the year 1996 1st of October, Notwithstanding its small landmass size, Ekiti state is a populated state with over 16 million people living and doing various businesses in it.
7) Akwa Ibom State
Akwa Ibom State is located in the South Southern region and also among the smallest state with a landmass size of 7,081 km2, Aside from being among the smallest states in Nigeria Akwa Ibom state is the highest oil-producing state in Nigeria.
This state is hosts 2 major seaports and is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Nigeria.
8) Enugu State
Enugu state which is also called “The Coal City”, is the 8th smallest state in Nigeria with a total landmass size of about 7,161 km2.
In the year 1991 Enugu state was formed out of the Old Anambra, Enugu state is also located in the southeastern part of the country, with an estimated population of 3 million people living in its territory.
9) F.C.T Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is the current capital city of Nigeria with its landmass size of 7,315 km². it was created in the year 1991 12th December replacing Lagos State as the capital city of Nigeria.
There have been lots of speculations that Abuja is not a state but when counting the 36 states and their capitals Abuja is being included, so we decided to add Abuja among the top 10 smallest states in Nigeria by landmass.
10) Osun State
The last on the top 10 smallest states in Nigeria is no other than Osun state which is located in the southwestern region of the country.
Osun state’s total landmass size is about 9,251 km² and also the third smallest state in the southwestern region in Nigeria.
